A protective tail guard, and continued good signs out of ICU

The Ojai Raptor Center has fitted Jackie with a tail guard, a lightweight protective sheet placed over her tail feathers so they don't bend, break, or get pulled out while she recovers in her hospital enclosure. Tail feathers are what a bald eagle uses to steer, brake, and stay stable in flight, so protecting them now matters for her eventual return to the wild. The care team says she is tolerating the guard well and was bright and alert as of Thursday, continuing the trend since her move out of intensive care.

Jackie has taken an encouraging step: the Ojai Raptor Center has moved her out of intensive care, where she needed oxygen support, into a regular hospital unit. ORC is clear this isn't an all-clear — she remains a very sick patient in stable but critical condition, still needing round-the-clock care while the cause of her anemia stays unknown. At home, Shadow continues guarding the territory; Sandy and Luna haven't been confirmed on camera since July 23, which FOBBV says is normal timing as young eagles disperse.
