Confirmed This is no longer a rumor. The Ojai Raptor Center confirmed Jackie died in the overnight hours of August 9 into Monday, August 10, after more than three weeks of intensive care. A joint CDFW statement on August 11 gave the fuller account ORC had promised: she developed a blood clot in her wing and near one kidney in her final days, though the underlying cause of her anemia has still not been announced. Not affiliated - ORC doesn't sell patient merchandise The Ojai Raptor Center posted its own note on Instagram to set the record straight: “We have seen many individuals and businesses selling merchandise featuring Patient 26-519, publicly known as ‘Jackie’, including some items being promoted as benefiting Ojai Raptor Center… Ojai Raptor Center Does Not Sell Patient Merchandise.” The center says it runs its own online shop for its own branded items, but not merchandise featuring Jackie or any other individual patient. Friends of Big Bear Valley is the only organization that approached ORC directly about a Jackie merchandise collaboration; ORC says it fully supports that project but specifically asked that none of its proceeds be sent to ORC. Some are AI-generated fakes The Ojai Raptor Center says AI-generated fake photos of Jackie have been circulating online, adding to a wave of misinformation and fueling nonstop requests for updates that pull staff attention away from patient care. In the center's words, wildlife medicine requires concentration and careful decision-making, and every unnecessary interruption takes time and focus away from the animals depending on them. Ruled out Testing has ruled out lead toxicosis, zinc toxicosis, aspergillosis, and rodenticide toxicosis, and vets say renal disease is not the underlying problem either, per the Ojai Raptor Center. Foreign objects like fishing hooks, lines, and weights were also ruled out, and her advanced CT scan found no cancer or metal objects. What's causing her severe anemia is still being investigated. Expert says unlikely FOBBV consulted an eagle expert at a rescue center. Because of the extraordinary bond Jackie and Shadow share, the expert considers it unlikely Shadow would move on now. Eagle mating hormones typically do not kick in until around late December or early January. Shadow is a wild, free eagle and the choice is always his, but nothing in his behavior suggests anything except a mate holding the territory for his partner. Not evidence of decline Bald eagles naturally have a soft, chattering call, very different from the loud shriek used in movies (that dramatic "eagle scream" actually belongs to a Red-tailed Hawk). The Ojai Raptor Center made this point in a general educational post on July 28. ORC has not commented on Jackie's voice specifically in any of her treatment videos, and a soft or quiet vocalization is normal eagle behavior, not a sign of her condition. Standard rehab gear, not a new wound The wrap some fans have spotted on Jackie's wing is a carpal guard, a soft protective bumper routinely used in raptor rehabilitation to shield the thin skin over a bird's wrist joint while it heals and moves around its enclosure. The Ojai Raptor Center says carpal guards "may look simple, but... are an important part of helping keep patients safe and supported during rehabilitation."
